For years, we’ve been using innovative, sustainable fibres in our designs and the latest addition to the Tretorn family is one of the best yet: Eco-friendly sneakers made of Apple Skin - a vegan leather alternative created of natural waste from the apple juice industry.

WHAT IS APPLE SKIN?

Apple Skin is a sustainable biobased leather alternative made from apple by-product discarded by the beverage industry. The material is formed by combining waste from the production of apple juice into a polyurethane mixture. Unlike other bio-based products, it doesn’t require soil or water for cultivation. Additionally, as it doesn’t generate any waste during production, it effectively closes the apples cycle. This results in an eco-friendly, non-toxic, and cruelty-free ’vegan leather’ that repurposes food waste.

HOW IS APPLE SKIN MADE?

Apple skin is made by collected, washed and dried leftover apple pomace, which is then converted to Nano-sized powder. This mixture of apple waste is then blended with a backing cloth made of wood pulp (Lyocell) and recycled plastic bottles (RPET). This creates an apple wasted blend, becoming a water-based PU. The last step, before creating the final product with apple skin, is color and texture.
